When you have dealt with fatigue, brain fog/ memory and concentration issues, possibly coupled with hair loss, and low sex drive, and weight changes for years…. you likely have already been seeking out answers to your health. You may be asking yourself:
Why is this all happening? Is it just a normal process of aging? There must be something more, something that I am missing…..
You may have come as far as going to your primary care health provider and had diagnostic testing on the thyroid gland. If some numbers on the blood panel were out of balance, most likely, a thyroid medication, would be prescribed.
The trouble with this, is often the medication prescribed, is only a band aid type treatment, just to get the thyroid numbers, back into balance. It never really looks further into why the thyroid is out of balance, and how to help it heal. Further to this, often the medication is not even the correct one, or the entire picture, as the entire thyroid gland has not even been tested for! So commonly, the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), is the ONLY number tested, when doing bloodwork. When in reality, to understand what is actually happening with the thyroid gland, and why it is not working, requires a much more detailed analysis. A complete thyroid blood panel needs to include:
- T4 (required to stimulate conversion of thyroid hormones into a useable form by the body)
- T3 (useable form of thyroid hormones for the body)
- rT3 (non-favourable, inactive pathway, that the T4 sometimes converts to)
- Antibody testing: at least TPO, but often others may be indicated as well
The reason for a complete thyroid panel, is that the problem may lie in a conversion issue with thyroid hormones. To utilize thyroid hormones, the body needs to convert T4, to T3, which is the bodies usable form of thyroid hormone. There are a few reasons why there may be a conversion issue for thyroid hormones into a useable form:
- the T4 is too low ( lacking key nutrients, and/or communication with the pathways that produce this in the brain)
- the T4 is converting to rT3, instead of T3 (which can happen if there is a high toxic load, and/or heavy metal build up in the body)
- there is a lack of key minerals needed to convert T4 to T3, (selenium, vitamin A, and zinc)
- the antibodies are too high, and inflammation is blocking the conversion of thyroid hormones into a useable form
If one, or more of the above issues is going on, the body will still be having all of the same symptoms of thyroid dysfunction… even if on a medication: the most common medication being Synthroid/levothyroxin, which stimulates T4 production. If T4 is production is stimulated with a medication, but can’t be converted, and utilized properly, then the problem/ symptoms will still be present!
It is SO IMPORTANT, to have a detailed examination of the thyroid gland, if you are either just starting to notice symptoms, or if you are already diagnosed with a thyroid condition, and only being monitored and treated based on your TSH number.
Furthermore, the true root cause of thyroid dysfunction, is always going to be deeper, than the thyroid gland itself. It requires a systematic approach at looking at all systems in the body, and determining which systems are out of balance/ not functioning well, to allow the thyroid to perform its job. For example, if there is a lack of the key minerals needed to allow the thyroid to convert hormones into a useable form, a deeper analysis as to why this is happening needs to be done, to start correcting the root cause of the problem. Treatment typically requires working on rebalancing several systems in the body, to allow the thyroid to heal.
