Are you experiencing issues with acne? You’re probably wondering why this is occurring. Perhaps, your acne comes and goes with different stages of your cycles or it’s a persistent problem. Maybe you’re between the ages of 35 and 55 and don’t understand why you are dealing with something that happens in the teen and early twenty years.
If you have had acne on and off for years, I’m sure you’ve tried some different treatment strategies, including prescription creams and medications to manage the symptoms. Sometimes these remedies will manage your symptoms, however, the problem with this type of treatment is if you are using this medication long term it can start to affect other systems in your body. There are side effects that can occur, so it’s really important to figure out where the skin issues are coming from.
What is Causing My Acne?
Our skin is often a reflection of what’s happening on the inside of our bodies. Women will think that because it seems to flare up at different times in their cycle month to month that it’s hormonal. There is some truth to this, but there is usually a reason that the hormones are out of balance and there is an expression coming out through the skin. The reason for this could be due to poor detoxification, which occurs in several different ways such as through the liver, gut, and skin. When detoxification happens in a negative way through our skin it causes acne to appear. It’s a sign that the body is trying to detoxify, but it is not doing it in an efficient and proper way.
When I’m treating a patient, I like to look at where this problem with detoxification might be coming from. Is it caused by food triggering inflammation in the gut that’s affecting the hormone and detoxification process? Could there be something in the liver genetically that is not allowing for sufficient detoxification? There are a variety of different things that could be happening and it’s important to narrow down the root cause in order to treat the condition.
Importance of Finding the Root Cause
If you have been managing this for a long time, it might be affecting you in several different ways in your life. You could be canceling social events due to your appearance. Or, maybe you’re having to buy different products or makeups to cover up some of the areas that you think are unfavorable to look at. These products, believe it or not, can actually have a toxic burden on your body and it might be slowing down your detoxification pathways even further. This typically is one of the root causes of the problem in the first place.
Fast forward 5 to 10 years from now, if this continues and the systems in your body become even more out of balance you can become more likely to be prone to other diseases. When your body does not detoxify correctly and your hormones are out of alignment you can even actually develop female cancers down the road.
